Vacuum Fluorescent Display Recognized as IEEE Milestone
The Vacuum Fluorescent Display, which Dr. Tadashi Nakamura, founder of Ise Electronics Corp. (now Noritake Itron Corp.), first commercialized in 1967, has been recognized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)*1 as an IEEE Milestone*2.
The Vacuum Fluorescent Display is the only electronic display device invented by a Japanese person. It is recognized by IEEE for having revolutionized the calculator industry as a low-cost and low-voltage solution to replace Nixie tubes at the time, and also for its easy-to-read self-illuminating display and high reliability, which led to its widespread use in a variety of fields, including home appliances, automobiles, and industrial equipment.

*1 The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is the world's largest non-profit professional organization in the electrical, electronics, and related fields. Its membership consists of over 450,000 electrical and electronics engineers, scientists and professionals from over 160 countries around the world.
*2 IEEE Milestones is a program established in 1983 to recognize significant historical achievements developed at least 25 years earlier that have made substantial contributions to society and industrial development in the electrical, electronics, and related fields.
